The Britex Blog
March 14, 2017 by Jamie Lau DesignsI love working with stripes just as much as I love textured ikat fabric. When I saw this striped Italian ikat blend with copper accents, I knew it would make for a great party dress. The metallic threads add a luxury feel and I thought it would be fun to play with the direction of the stripes. You may recall a similar silhouette from one of my previous posts, which goes in depth about the patternmaking steps for creating the bodice design. Much of the inspiration for my designs comes from my environment and looking beyond literal fashion references. Here are some artworks I was drawn to, mainly because of the intersection of stripes.

We were allowed to make our final project in our own measurements, and being the pragmatic that I am, I designed a fairly basic work-appropriate outfit. Perhaps I should have made something a little more exciting, but this way, I'll get a lot of use out of my hard work! Both fabrics are from Britex, and I selected them for just such an outfit.

If you are seriously looking to sharpen your sewing skills and you live in the San Francisco area, you go to Apparel Arts, which you probably already know about since the design school hosted several Pop-up Britex workshops last year. What's new is that Suzy, director of Apparel Arts, is now offering patternmaking classes on Craftsy, an online community of makers. Yes, it's true. You can now learn the basics of patternmaking at your own pace, in your own home. Of course, this does not take the place of participating in an Apparel Arts class in person, but it is a good fix for greatly advancing your patternmaking skills!

March 13, 2013 by GeanaIt's not everyday that Britex has teachers, and even more rare, that a Britex teacher gets a pro bono Tinype portrait taken at Photobooth in the Mission. This rare moment is due to the fact that Photobooth will be hosting POP-UP Britex taught by Jamie Lau on May 16. It was an awesome experience. We arrived, were made comfortable and had great conversation about art, photography and our current projects. Within about 15 minutes the plates were set and our photographer was ready to shoot.

Every month Britex Fabrics proudly presents Pop-up Britex.
Pop-up Britex brings textile and design education to neighborhoods across San Francisco in collaboration with our favorite venues and artists. To help us sharpen our wits, Four Barrel Coffee provides drinks and bites for every pop-up. Special thanks to our sponsors Apparel Arts, Makeshift society and Photobooth.
