Contributing Sewer – Amy’s Dusty Rose Jenny Skirt

Amy, from the blog Sew Well: as by reflection, is a bioorganic chemist, cat lover, BurdaStyle member, and sewing enthusiast. Amy describes her interest in sewing as a gratifying balance to her science research; she enjoys the relatively immediate results she gets with a sewing project, compared to the often less timely results with scientific research.

Amy made BurdaStyle’s Jenny Basic Skirt pattern #6058 with Britex Fabrics’ Italian Dusty Rose Lightweight Stretch Wool Blend and had lots of helpful comments. Click here to read more »

A Summer Frock – Imported Stretch Cotton, BurdaStyle, and Natasha

Natasha from the sewing blog NattyJaneSews made this summer-licious frock from Britex Fabrics Italian stretch cotton and 10/2010 Full skirted dress with cut-out bustline #116 (available as a print at home PDF.) Natasha is a self-taught seamstress, hails from Berkeley, and is featured in The BurdaStyle Sewing Handbook. She said she was instantly attracted to the vibrant color and subtle stripes of the watermelon sherbet fabric, and was surprised at how easy working with stretch cotton turned out to be. She loved how the fabric’s lycra accentuated the bodice fit. We think this dress is swell – perfect for riding San Francisco cable cars on a breezy summer day!

Dark Garden – In business since 1989, Dark Garden’s uniqueness lies in their approach to making people feel beautiful – they create corsets and wedding gowns that truly express each individual’s personality and style, bringing out their natural beauty and boosting confidence. They believe every person has the right to feel gorgeous, not only on their wedding day, but any day they choose to make special. Sheri Jurnecka, a practicing San Francisco attorney, costumer, and corsetiere, has enjoyed creating and wearing fantasy and historical costumes since she was a teenager. Her interest in costuming has evolved over time to include embellished and imaginative corsetry as the basis for opulent evening and bridal wear.

Satin Shadow custom designs historical costumes for both men and women. From English Regency evening wear for men, including fall front breeches, to enchanting and highly embellished Victorian Gowns that are perfect for a romantic period wedding, to alluring Jazz Era dresses, exceptional for dancing away the night. Our goal is to make your fantasy costume a reality.

SFGate Article about Britex!

It is Britex Fabrics’ 60th anniversary! What a fabulous article and series of photographs of our store in our local online rag, SFGate! We are particularly taken with quotes from our dedicated staff members, many who are first generation immigrants who’ve worked at Britex for decades. Maya says, “I walk down the street and people say, ‘That’s the button lady!’ I love all the buttons, though I particularly love anything with rhinestones. The sparklier, the better.” Ana, who landed her first job in America at Britex says, “Twenty-two years here. It has changed a lot, but it is still a family business. It is a Mecca. I look at all of the colors and fabric and feel happy. To me, it is a place where art happens.” Opened by Austrians Lucy and Martin Spector, Britex Fabrics is currently run by their daughter Sharman, “My parents came out to San Francisco on vacation and saw this place and my father said, ‘We are taking that store.’ One of the first things my dad did was to create a ‘wall of wool,’ which we have today.” (Photos by Siana Hristova and article by Julian Guthrie)
