Jamie Lau is a designer, sewing instructor, fashion writer, and native San Franciscan. A self-taught seamstress consistently inspired by her love of dresses, Jamie infuses a playful nostalgia into her work by transforming simple silhouettes into fashion forward frocks sewn from traditional Japanese prints, luxurious brocades, handwoven ikats, and her own textile designs. In addition to designing her clothing line Jamie Lau Designs, she guest blogs and teaches workshops for Britex Fabrics. Jamie is also the author of BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern and is a sewing instructor at New York's Textile Arts Center. After ten plus years of living in New York, Jamie relocated her design studio to San Francisco.

  • Project RealWay: Local Designer Stefanie Featuring Britex Fabrics

October 12, 2016 by Britex Fabrics

Stefanie is a local Bay Area designer who is challenging herself to create a look based on the same challenge given to the designers on this season of Project Runway. Her project is called Project RealWay.

For her second challenge, Stefanie created a look for the "Every Day Woman", with fabric she purchased at Britex Fabrics. Check out her blog post featuring Britex Fabrics.

"I immediately thought a coat/dress would be perfect for the versatility needed in the ‘everywoman’s’ wardrobe. I found this beautiful mustard yellow satin-backed tweed, which allows the fabric to be raw cut at the sleeves and hem. I liked this rough edge detail as a contrast to the covered up silhouette to avoid the look from being to conservative. The inset details are actually done in ombre silk dyed ribbon, and inset in-between the tweed panels for a little sheerness. Lastly, I chose to exaggerate the sleeve as this coat needed a bit of a flair so it wasn’t too simple, and I particularly like the bracelet sleeve length so that it can be layered nicely over longer tops."

  • Our Love is Here to Stay!

October 7, 2016 by Britex Fabrics

Britex Fabrics has been in the news lately. So, what's the real story on Britex? We are not leaving Union Square. The real story at this point is that we've been absolutely overwhelmed by the calls, and emails, and tweets, and Facebook messages from people who are heartbroken at the mere idea that we might be closing. And while it's terrible to worry people like that, it's really reassuring to know that we're so valued in the community - it means that we're doing something right, and we're going to keep on doing it! And I really love having all these conversations that we wouldn't ordinarily have - everyone's got a Britex story.

  • NEW Liberty of London Prints!

September 29, 2016 by Britex Fabrics

We’re pleased to present three new Liberty of London luxurious cotton lawns in our store. Liberty of London is a distinguished English designer, producing fine cottons since 1875. The first is a fabulous East Meets West, featuring mystical dragons, camels, suns, and phases of the moon. The second is Strawberry Thief, which features blue birds and mini strawberries, and the third is Tree of Eden, which features brightly colored flowers. Liberty cottons are durable, and nearly wrinkle-free when taken directly from the dryer. This fabric makes delicious pajamas, dandy tailored shirts, dapper bow ties, and is a joy for hand-smocking. 54" wide. 100% cotton. Imported from England. Someone told us that you could finger-press Liberty lawn to remove wrinkles, and to our surprise we discovered that they were correct. Liberty is incredibly drapable, long-lasting, and luxurious. These amazing cotton fabrics are available in our brick-and-mortar store or through our online customized swatch service. Call 415-392-2910 now and ask for the second floor cotton department to order. These are only a few of many new prints we now have in stock! All Liberty cotton prints are $45 / yard and 54" wide.
