Joy Mao is a Bay Area transplant, and Britex Fabrics regular, originally from Shanghai that spends her days with the good people of MUH-TAY-ZIK HOF-FER, and her nights sewing away in her tiny home studio (aka. her dining room table). She has had a passion for designing and making clothes since college, but until this year she didn't have the courage to take it further than a hobby.
Last year, Joy made a pair of pants for a good friend. They were big and billowy with ties at the sides, inspired by Japanese martial arts pants. her friend wore them to The Voyager Shop (thevoyagershop.com) one day, and the incredibly kind folks there loved them enough to purchase two pairs for the store. Within a week or so, both pairs had sold out, and she was then invited to design more for them.
This summer, Joy is honored to be debuting her first ever womens wear collection under her name as its own pop-up shop at Voyager for the month of July. There are 6 styles in the collection—tops, bottoms, and dresses—that are meant to be comfy, flattering, and fun. It's an extremely limited run, partly because the fabrics are very special (sourced primarily from the beautiful collection at Britex Fabrics), but also because each piece is made by hand mostly between the hours of 8pm-12am when Joy is home from her day job.
Joy is honored to be a part of the Britex Fabrics community, and The Voyager Shop, and she is excited to be sharing her work this summer!
