Craftsy Classes by Apparel Arts’ Suzy

If you are seriously looking to sharpen your sewing skills and you live in the San Francisco area, you go to Apparel Arts, which you probably already know about since the design school hosted several Pop-up Britex workshops last year. What’s new is that Suzy, director of Apparel Arts, is now offering patternmaking classes on Craftsy, an online community of makers. Yes, it’s true. You can now learn the basics of patternmaking at your own pace, in your own home. Of course, this does not take the place of participating in an Apparel Arts class in person, but it is a good fix for greatly advancing your patternmaking skills!

POP-UP BRITEX Photoshoot at Photobooth

It’s not everyday that Britex has teachers, and even more rare, that a Britex teacher gets a pro bono Tinype portrait taken at Photobooth in the Mission. This rare moment is due to the fact that Photobooth will be hosting POP-UP Britex taught by Jamie Lau on May 16.

It was an awesome experience. We arrived, were made comfortable and had great conversation about art, photography and our current projects. Within about 15 minutes the plates were set and our photographer was ready to shoot.

Linen Tunic Dress by Sonya Philip

If you haven’t met Sonya Philip of 100 Acts of Sewing, here’s your chance. She’ll be teaching our very first Pop-up Britex on March 14 where she’ll demonstrate all the skills necessary for making an a-line tunic dress. Here’s a peek into her creative process using two pieces of linen from the our online selection.

Why did you choose these fabrics for your project?

I adore linen. It is wonderful to work with and has a beautiful hand. Living in San Francisco, I find I can wear linen almost year-round. I chose the main fabric (Golden Wheat Linen/Silk Blend) primarily for the color–mustard and curry yellows just really speak to me right now. I wanted a strong contrast color and was taken by the richness of the Two-tone Raspberry Linen. Click here to read more »
