For about a year, our team of Guest Bloggers have been sampling and offering tons of tips on working with a variety of fabrics from our online selection. They have also been sharing their personal tricks on using and altering existing patterns. Here’s where the really awesome news comes in—our guest bloggers will now be test driving some of your favorite (or soon to be favorite) independent pattern companies. The list is pretty long, but here are a few. Find the entire list of collaborating pattern companies on our Guest Blogger page.

Professional Coat-making Tips from Jen

01Britex

Hi everyone, Jen from Grainline Studio here to talk a little bit about winter coats. I know that sewing a full on winter coat can seem a bit intimidating but they really are a most rewarding project, and one of my favorite things to sew! In this post we are going to talk about choosing the right fabric as well as construction tips to get a professional and long lasting coat. The pattern used in this tutorial is my Birchwood Toggle Coat pattern, which will be available in my shop shortly, paired with this unbelievably beautiful and warm Double-Faced coating from Britex. I’m also kind of freaking out about the toggle closures as well. So beautiful and actually made from quality materials. The colors really are a perfect match with this wool! Tutorial + Free Oversized Tee Pattern

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It seems like tissue knits are everywhere lately, and with good reason, they’re amazing for summer layering. They make a nice light layer for cool evenings or, if you’re in Chicago like I am, all these cool days we’re having lately. Tissue knits can be a bit intimidating, they’re so thin, wispy, and roll like crazy, so I’m here to show you how I work with them.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I was lucky enough to be able to make two tees in this amazing Japanese tissue knit, the first I went with these classic tomato and cream stripes and in the second I did a bit of color-blocking with this amazing neon yellow and charcoal grey. These knits are so light and airy, I couldn’t believe it. Serious dream town. In this tutorial I’m using my Hemlock Tee pattern which I created just for these tissue knits. You can download the pattern for free here at Grainline Studios.

Tutorial: Silk Tassel Scarf

Hi, I’m Jen from Grainline Studio and I’m super excited to present my first project in collaboration with Britex Fabrics, a tutorial to make this super cute polka dot chiffon scarf with tassels! This scarf is the perfect thing to throw on with your sweaters this winter, it dresses things up a bit and also adds a new texture to a typically knit heavy season. The silk was a dream to work with, softer and silkier than any chiffon I’ve worked with before and with a most beautiful sheen. Also can we talk about the color and print? It’s not just ivory, it has a subtle blush hint to it that makes it super flattering on everyone who’s tried it on so far and I’m a huge fan of the scattered polka dot. It’s a perfect way to throw an updated polkadot into your wardrobe. This was actually my first time working with silk thread (other than needle turned applique) and it really added a subtle polish that probably only I will notice, but isn’t that the best kind really? I think so. Make this scarf with or without the tassels, I think they’re pretty fun but unfortunately so does my cat who tried to steal one right before we took these finished project photos. You can follow the instructions below to make your own, click on the project supplies to order your own scarf materials!
