Sewing Indie Month: Voting Time

Somehow I doubt that Chuleenan of C Sews was the only one sewing into the AM hours of the night in order to meet the Sewing Indie Month deadline last week. We are glad she stuck with it because she made it to the short list with a gorgeous cotton print from Britex. She stopped by the store today, and we could not help but snap a few pictures.

Sewing Indie Month: Bamboo Jersey Maxi

Photo 1

Did you enter one of the sew-along contests for Sewing Indie Month?  I just finished my entry using the Out And About dress pattern from indie pattern company, SewCaroline, and a wonderfully soft and drapey bamboo jersey knit from Britex.  I made a number of alterations to the pattern (since I’m entering my dress in the Pattern Hacking contest) and am really happy with how the dress turned out!

The Out and About Dress has two sleeve options – elbow length and full length – but Caroline has also made a tutorial to create a sleeveless version.  I thought a dress with full sleeves and a full length skirt in a distinctive stripe would be a bit too stripey and I am glad I went with this sleeveless version as ever since I finished the dress it has been so hot that there has been no need for sleeves!

Sewing Indie Month: An SBCC and Britex outfit

IMG_1373

Despite popular belief, it really isn’t that bad being short.  At 5’1″, I’ve got step stools all around the house and I can manage just fine, thank you very much.  My biggest beef with being petite is that non-petite clothing just doesn’t fit.  It’s one of the main reasons I sew my own clothing: with some small adjustments, I can shorten bodices, rises, sleeves, and pants to suit my size.  You can imagine my excitement, then, a few months ago, when I did a search for “petite Indie sewing patterns” and stumbled upon Skinny Bitch Curvy Chick!  So when given the chance to participate in Sewing Indie Month with Britex, I immediately knew I wanted to make a whole outfit from SBCC.  What fun! Sewing Indie Month Review

banner_sewingindie

Sewing Indie Month is going strong. If you’ve been missing some of the activity, check out our previous post to find out what pattern companies are participating. Also, don’t forget about the sewalongs. Here’s an update from each of our sewalong leaders…

Wanett of Sown Brooklyn just posted this summery look last week. She chose a blue Britex linen (so sorry, it’s all gone). This drop waist pattern by Pauline Alice would also look mighty fine in our Sweet Wine Linen or Rust Linen & Viscose blend.

Jenny of Cashmerette will be posting this project on May 22 using our super fun Perky Floral Silk and this pattern by Sinbad & Sailor.

It’s Sewing Indie Month!!!

banner_sewingindie

Guess what? Britex is a proud supporter of Sewing Indie Month happening right now! Sewing Indie Month is an online party with 21 independent sewing pattern designers and their best friends (that would be you)!

In the organizer’s own words…

“Sewing Indie Month is all about making new friends and sewing great garments. See, when you’re an independent sewing pattern designer sometimes you really wish you could ask your fellow designers’ advice, or even just commiserate about how little sleep you get when there’s an error in one of your patterns. That can seem weird and presumptuous though, asking a stranger, a competing business owner, to chat about certain things they’d rather keep private. But that’s the great thing about being an indie designer, your fellow designers aren’t your competition, they’re your allies.”

You won’t want to miss the sewalongs lead by some mighty awesome bloggers (including our very own Guest Blogger Laura Mae). Sewalong themes and blogs follow:

Indie Love Affair – Wanett of Sown Brooklyn
Dressed to the Nines – Laura of Lilacs and Lace
Everyday Casual – Jenny of Cashmerette
Pattern Hacking – Rhonda of Rhonda’s Creative Life

The best part is that you can participate and win! Click here to read more »

Winner of PVF Coat Giveaway

Laura’s daughter proudly wearing the adorable “play dress.” Looks intentional to me!

Our winner is Laura from Seattle, WA–where she will certainly put the beautiful new Poppy Von Frohlich coat to good use. Here is her sewing blunder-turned-triumph tale

“I was making a top from the free Sorbetto pattern from Colette Patterns. It calls for a center pleat. I had happened to read in the Coletterie blog about adding rickrack under pleats for a design twist so I put some black pompoms instead because I had no other rickrack in my stash. The fabric I chose was a very busy cotton with Japanese kokeshi dolls. Well, by the time I finished and showed it to hubby for an opinion he gave me a side eye look. Fail. Never got that look before.

Failure turned out ok because I altered it by adding more pleats to be my little girl’s dress. I had enough fabric to make long sleeves and two tiers of ruffles. My little girl loves it despite the pompoms being reminiscent of spiders dangling in the middle pleat!”

Thank you to everyone who participated!

Have a happy new year!

The Fashion Incubator San Francisco (FISF) is now accepting applications for six new Designers in Residence for its second annual session which begins February 5, 2013.

Application deadline is Friday, November 30, 2012 at 5 p.m. PST. Applications are available on the FISF website, where submission details are provided.
