We just received a shipment of designer wool felt! This 3 mm 100 % wool felt is exceptionally dense at 0.28g/cm3, water repellent, and has a soft sheared surface. We have five natural heathered colors – charcoal, sky blue, beige, camel, and red. This felt cuts easily with regular scissors, leaving a sharp, clean edge. Designers are currently utilizing wool felt in jewelry-creation, messenger-style bags, phone and laptop covers, hats, coasters, and even decorative bowls! This 100% wool felt is 24” wide, $59.99/yard, and can be found on Britex Fabric’s 4th floor.
Please email M. Du Jour at Britex Fabrics or our fabric mail order department if you want to buy some of this amazing fabric.
I’m in love with this sophisticated country fair Japanese cotton. It is lightweight enough to be perfect sewn up into a pair of urbane tailored pajamas, perhaps with chartreuse piping around the cuffs, collar, and pocket. I’m also much enamored of the color scheme and the taupe background. This soft fabric is found on… Britex Fabric’s 2nd floor, is 100% cotton, 45” wide and $24.99/yard.
We just got several bolts of new Japanese fabric, including this briskly fabulous piece with London images including the Tower of London, red double-decker buses, and marching Queen’s Guards. I deeply desire a bow tie from this, which I’d debonairly wear with a red wool double-breasted vest and 501s. This fabric is 85% linen/15% cotton, 45” wide and $29.99/yard.
Is Broken down,
Dance over my Lady Lee.
Is Broken down
With a gay Lady.”

Britex Fabrics has just expanded their selection of boning and other corset-making notions. We now carry both flat and spiral steel boning in widths from ¼” to ½” and 4” to 17” long, busks with brass or chrome knobs, and all black busks on the 4th floor. We will feature details later! To assist you with your garment construction, here is Tight Linings and Boning by Mary Brooks Picken, and published by the Woman’s Institute of Domestic Arts & Sciences in 1922. This 44 page book covers making the making the tight lining, boning, and girdles or waist-line foundations.
Jody of RocketCityDigs made this adorable a-line holiday jumper for her daughter out of vintage double-knit fabric from Britex Fabrics. The festive Kelly green rick-rack and cherry-red buttons add a smashing touch, and were also bought at Britex. To make it even more impressive, Jody self-drafted the pinafore pattern from one of Eliza’s old jumpers and some newspaper! Check out Jody’s blog for what she did the remainder of her vintage fabric. FYI: We just found some more vintage fabric, including some slinky polyester jerseys. All vintage polyester can be found on our 4th floor.
Britex Fabrics will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 25th. We are open Friday the 26th and Saturday the 27th between 10 am and 6 pm. We have several sale tables, including some wools on the 1st floor, but we do not have a Black Friday sale. Have a fabulous Thanksgiving!
P.S. (And here is a bonus recipe for lusciously creamy and light Spoon Bread, Du Jour’s favorite holiday side dish)
Remember to buy fragrant spices, whole cloves, oranges, and beauteous ribbons from Britex to make this old-fashioned treat. Truli is a talented jeweler, and craft-person. Here she presents a tutorial for making traditional clove-studded pomanders. She says, “The Victorians hung pomanders in their closets to ward off moths. Every Thanksgiving I make the spicy orange pomanders and come Christmas time they are dried and ready to be put out in a large festive bowl for my family and friends to take home as a thoughtful handcrafted gift and the rich spicy fragrance will last for years…. they are so simple to make it’s also a nice project to do with your children or a great activity for children to make in supervised groups too.” Their smell makes me think of holiday gatherings …..next to the scent of freshly waxed antique furniture or fir trees, these make me nostalgic for hot cider, sleigh rides, and uproarious groups of peeps playing board games until 2 am.
M. Du Jour is going on vacation for a week. I am off to play my accordion, loll in candle-lit hot tubs, traipse through art shows, sail the Bay, and cook lots of amazing and yummy food. See you in a week………
This delightful graphic floral cotton fabric is so bouncy! It makes me want to paint my bathroom creamy pale yellow, with darker yellow accents, and then use it for curtains, with leaf green grosgrain ribbon for the curtain borders and tabs. This 100% cotton fabric is 44” wide, $14.99/yard, and can be found on Britex Fabric’s 2nd floor.
“In the town where I was born,
Lived a man who sailed to sea,
And he told us of his life,
In the land of submarines,
So we sailed on to the sun,
Till we found the sea green,
And we lived beneath the waves,
In our yellow submarine,
We all live in yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine,
We all live in yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine.”
