Japanese Silk Thread – Now Online!

Britex Fabrics’ online store now carries three weights of Japanese monofilament silk thread – carded silk buttonhole twist, 30 weight silk top-stitching thread, and 50 weight silk all-purpose sewing thread. Some of these Japanese silk threads are a Britex Fabrics exclusive! In a plethora of luscious colors and three weights, these monofilament silk threads are perfect for making hand-made buttonholes, top-stitching, hand-quilting, and other fine tailoring techniques. In addition to tailoring, these luxurious silk threads can be used for many other hand-crafted needle arts. Once you have tried silk thread for machine sewing or quilting, you won’t want to ever return to mundane polyester or cotton thread!

Sew Sportif Norfolk Jackets for Fall!

There is hardly anything better to do with the hot lazy days of summer than to make an icy pitcher of mint tea or tangy lemonade, learn new sewing techniques, experiment with patterns, and make autumn duds. We forecast the recurrence of fabulously dapper casual clothing; the suave vintage-inspired Norfolk jacket is perfect for chilly days spent drinking hot chocolate while strolling through fall foliage. Kass at ReconstructingHistory has published patterns and directions for men’s Norfolk jackets and women’s Norfolk jackets, including embellishment suggestions, historical notes and period tailoring. We are planning on making our own sportif Norfolk jacket from coffee brown and cream wool tweed, lined with brown and cream geometrically patterned silk, and fastened with woven brown leather buttons….with all fabrics and buttons are available at Britex Fabrics!

1810 Lace Wedding Gown – Karen

Here is another stunning wedding gown made of Britex Fabrics fabrics and lace by Karen. She says, “It’s a beautiful Italian ivory lace which was hand pieced to configure into this gown. My inspiration was the 1810 Empire style made famous by Napoleon’s Emperess Josephine….or the fashions of Jane Austen.” She worked with the debonair Douglas on this wedding gown also. This makes me yearn to waltz in the starry moonlight at midnight.

The Fox & the Crow Vintage Lace

Here is another vintage lace from our online store. I long to wear a pair of chocolate brown lawn pajamas trimmed with this charming lace, and curl up with a cup of heavily sweetened Ceylon tea and Janet Flanner’s “Paris Was Yesterday, 1925-1939”. This charming 1 1/8″ wide ivory vintage lace depicts a scene from the Aesop’s Fable, “The Fox and the Crow”. As Jean de la Fontaine said:
“Perched on a lofty oak,
Sir Raven held a lunch of cheese;
Sir Fox, who smelt it in the breeze,
Thus to the holder spoke:
“Ha! how do you do, Sir Raven?
Well, your coat, sir, is a brave one!.”

Vintage Silk Chantilly Lace from France

Here is some difficult to find silk vintage Chantilly lace. This is an exquisitely delicate and unusual 12″ wide Chantilly lace. Simple flowers and leaves are strewn gracefully across a loose netting background, with one gently scalloped edge. Both edges are adorned with wispy eyelash trim. Once hand-washed in cold water, this lace softens up delectably. This would perfect on the bodice of a romantic vintage-inspired wedding gown!

Tipsy White Chapeau

Sigh! We knew that chapeaux are all the rage, but this causes our heart to beat even faster with delight! Here is the marvelously talented artist Yoko Ono at the Costume Institute Gala 2011, to celebrate the opening of the exhibition ‘Savage Beauty’ in honor of recently deceased innovator and designer Alexander McQueen. She is wearing a fantastique tipsy Stephen Jones hat with a whoosh of swooping white millinery netting over one bright and bespectacled eye.
